There're not that many rules for reading in Russian, as well as there's no real way to predict the stress position in a word. But there're 3 basic points that one has to keep in mind. For instance,
Why does "o" sometimes sound as "a" in Russian?
Here's the bottom line:
1. You read О as О when it's stressed;
you read О as А when it's not stressed.
2. Ё is always stressed.
3. When Е or Я aren't stressed, you'd often read them as И.
