We each paid £5 towards the cost of the food.

Hello everybody! I came across this sentence today in the morning. I was impressed by the preposition 'towards'. I'd never tell that it's possible to use it in the context like this. "We each paid £5 towards the cost of the food." (from Oxford Practice Grammar). Could you please tell me why "towards" is good here and could you please give some more examples of "towards" used in the same way as in the sentence above.
