What are words/phrases/expressions in your native language that have no English equivalent?
7 years agoI'm curious of words/phrases/expressions that have no equivalent in English and what does that mean. It's always fun to hear words that don't translate into English!
Some untranslatable words in Bahasa Indonesia are:
Sumpah, lo? – ‘sumpah’ literary means vow in English. But when it is ‘sumpah lo?’ it is an expression used to say are you sure? Or really?
Gemes – when you see a baby with cuteness overload or someone you love or miss so much, and you get uncontrollable urge to bite or pinch their cheek and hug them tightly.
Alay – a person considered ‘alay’ when he/she acts beyond her/his age. For example kids who act like adult or adults act like teenager. This could also mean when someone exaggerates something.
