What is 'Received Pronunication'?

'Received pronunciation' (RP) is the most 'posh' version of English speech. It is spoken by just 2% of native English speakers, and historically it has been the accent of the English upper class. During my lessons, I speak something close to RP, because it is a form of English speech that far more of my students are familiar with than my own 'natural' accent - a mild form of 'scouse', the Liverpool accent. This is because English characters in films and on TV shows often speak a form of RP.
