Why crocodiles sleep with one opened eye?
To detect preys and dangers surrounding them, crocodiles keep an eye open while they sleep.
A new Australian study revealed that crocodiles leave one of their eyes opened during sleep; to explore the surrounding risks or games.
Researchers in La Trobe University in Melbourne have used infrared cameras to study the behavior of saltwater crocodiles, and it showed that these predators use a technique called "shut an eye from one side."
Previous studies have shown that animals –including birds, dolphins, seals and sea- elephants- also sleep using a hemispheres of the brain every time.
This practice enables the animals to keep the other half of the brain conscious, and the other eye opened to monitor the surrounding area.
The researchers studied how the reaction of the crocodiles during sleep when they were approached by other crocodiles, as well as humans, and found that they monitored the stimuli with an open eye
