앞의 말이 나타내는 행동이 완전히 끝났음을 나타내는 표현.
An expression used to indicate that the act mentioned in the preceding statement is completely done.
(In addition to the fact that an action is completed, this structure also includes the speaker’s feeling, which can be 1) happiness, satisfaction, a sense of accomplishment, a sense of relief, good surprise about finally completing a task and getting rid of a burden, or 2) saddness, frustration, dissatisfaction, discontent(ment), complaint,bad surprise that something happened in a way that the speaker did not want or expect.)
It’s attached to the infinitive verb stem of either a descriptive or processive verbs, and the verb tense is expressed through it (the infinitive of a verb is when it doesn't have the polite form attached to it; in this case, it's the present one we refer to).
Note that whatever verb you use with this pattern, the translation will always be related to the verb you use, and not to 버리다 (which would mean to throw away, if used on its own), as it’s only used to emphasize. That means you don’t have to add the actual meaning of this verb to the sentence.
when you want to emphasize that an action has ended completely, you add the verb 버리다 to the infinitive and conjugate the verb. It basically adds feelings of either relief or regret to the sentence, most of the time.
어떤 상황이 끝났음을 나타내는 표현으로 "~고 말다"와 대체하여 사용할 수 있으나 '~고 말다'는 말하는 사람이 주어가 되어야 하는 한편 '~어 버리다'는 제한이 없다
It can be used as an expression indicating that a situation is over, and it can be used in place of "~고 말다", but while the person who says'~고 말다' must be the subject of sentence, there is no limit to'~어 버리다'.
