Gerunds and infinitives with reporting verbs?!? Is there any easy way to teach or learn this?

With reporting verbs such as 'ask, say,apologize, shout' etc is there an easy(ier) way of teaching this except for just studying which ones are followed by a gerund (i.e 'he apologized for being') or 'to+infinitive' or 'to+object+infinitive' and is it actually possible to assimilate all these examples or do you learn them through reading and exposure?
