CIAO! My name is Raffaele and I am a native Italian speaker who has been living abroad for 12 years (so I know the initial difficulties to learn and speak a different language). I have a Bachelors degree in Pedagogy and I have been working as an Italian teacher for foreigners/ refugees and in school projects with teenagers who dropped out of high school, since 2004. I obtained my BA at the University of Venice in Linguistics and Foreign Languages and I completed a MSc degree in Neuroscience of Language at University College London. I'm currently pursuing a PhD in Psycholinguistics. I love travelling and living in different countries, blending in with cultures and lifestyles. I was preparing a lesson for a student of mine, when I found myself struggling with a translation. The word was “cavare”. «Pull out» I thought. But then… was there a better word? “Cavare”, in Italian, doesn’t only mean “to pull out”, that would be “estrarre”, “tirar fuori”, “rimuovere” or something else. “Cavare” has the word “cavità” (cavity) in it. “Cavare” means “to extract from a cavity”, “to remove and leave a cavity” and I couldn’t find a single word in English that suited the perfect meaning. This happens to me all the time, as I speak three languages daily and I am a “word perfectionist”: I am fascinated by the meaning that every word can have, those little shades of significance that can only be understood by those who profoundly study a language. And that is what I do: I study, all the time, to speak each of my three languages at its best, and I teach, to make my students learn properly the meaning of words and their best combination.
