Hello, my name is Federico, I'm italian, I was born in Rome and that's where I'm living now. In the past I lived in several italian cities like Milan, Turin, Naples and others. I graduated with a degree in Economics. Io have a second-level Master degree in Italian language for foreigners. I've also obtained the Ditals certificate for teaching Italian to foreigners. Along with private lessons held both online and face-to-face, I teach in a school of Italian for foreigners in the center of Rome. My students are adults with various levels of language skills, from elementary to advanced. I offer Italian lessons for both general and specific areas (business and legal Italian) and provide the preparation for the Cils exam. I was preparing a lesson for a student of mine, when I found myself struggling with a translation. The word was “cavare”. «Pull out» I thought. But then… was there a better word? “Cavare”, in Italian, doesn’t only mean “to pull out”, that would be “estrarre”, “tirar fuori”, “rimuovere” or something else. “Cavare” has the word “cavità” (cavity) in it. “Cavare” means “to extract from a cavity”, “to remove and leave a cavity” and I couldn’t find a single word in English that suited the perfect meaning. This happens to me all the time, as I speak three languages daily and I am a “word perfectionist”: I am fascinated by the meaning that every word can have, those little shades of significance that can only be understood by those who profoundly study a language.
