Accents

I'd love to hear some opinions about accents.

I'm from Scotland, and I grew up speaking with a strong Scottish accent.

As I have lived in other countries and taught English, my accent has significantly reduced. I'm glad that I am easy to understand, but when I go home sometimes I feel sad that my accent has changed so much.

What do English learners think? Which accents are easiest to understand? Which are the most difficult? Is reducing your own accent important to you, or do you believe accents are a positive thing that we should embrace?

Many students ask me for help in reducing their accent, which I am happy to do; however, personally, I love to hear people speak English in their own accent. It's amazing to see the language change and develop. English belongs to everyone, after all.
