Don't judge a book by its cover.
The meaning is applicable to a book with a nice picture on the front but the contents do not match up to the impression on the outside. The idiom is used in relation to judging a person by looks or appearance only.
Better to judge a book by its bibliography, contents page, publisher, date of publication, topic, title, author, introduction, and finally the actual substance of the content.
