Gain fluency: learn how to discuss your viewpoint
6 years agoThere are three types of persuasive strategies, used in arguments to support claims and respond to opposing arguments. A good argument will use a combination of all three appeals to make its case, but you can practice one at a time if your goal is to learn how to discuss your point of view on a topic or issue.
Start by taking one of the proposed strategies below and start learning how to defend your contention (in English) and gain fluency when you participate in a discussion:
– Logic: a logical argument, an appeal to logic or reason. EXAMPLE:
"You won't find any deer along this road. In 25 years of driving the same route, I haven’t seen a single one."
– Ethics or values: appeals based on the reliability, credibility, or expertise of the issue or the speaker. EXAMPLE:
"Doctors all over the world recommend this type of treatment."
– Emotion and needs: appeals to the audience's needs, values, or emotions. EXAMPLE:
"There’s no price that can be placed on peace of mind. Our advanced security systems will protect the well-being of your family so that you can sleep soundly at night."
Write your own EXAMPLES, defending your own opinions:
