Halloween

Many people know the word Halloween, but not so many know about its origins, importance and traditions. Halloween dates back to the ancient Celtic tradition of Samhain (pronounced sow-in). The Celts celebrated their New Year on November the 1st which marked the end of summer harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter, a time of year that was often associated with death. Celts believed that on the night before the new year (31st October), the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. On this night they celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. This important date later blended with the Christian All Saints' Day on the 2nd November where the church honors their dead. All Saints’ Day celebration was also called All-hallows or All-hallowmas. The night before it, the traditional night of Samhain in the Celtic religion, began to be called All-Hallows Eve and, eventually, Halloween.
These days for many Halloween is simply a fun time (especially for children!) to dress up and have parties!
