Pronunciation Frustration / What's a Homograph?!

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but sometimes English just makes no sense. Unfortunately, the rules for pronunciation don't always work!

Homographs are words (two or more) spelled the same but not necessarily pronounced the same. They also have different meanings and origins. e.g., bow ( /bou/ ): to bend or the front of a ship; bow ( /bō/ ): a knot or weapon

Read these sentences aloud to practice your homograph pronunciation.
  1. The bandage was wound around the wound.
  2. The farm was used to produce produce.
  3. The dump was so full that it has to refuse more refuse.
  4. We must polish the Polish furniture.
  5. He could lead if he would get the lead out.
  6. The soldier decided to desert his dessert in the desert.
  7. Since there is no time like the present, he thought it was time to present the present.
