Why are people so desperate to get rid of their accents?

I had an interview the other day, and after the girl said to me in Spanish: ''Sorry for my English I have a very strong accent.'' I was shocked! I told her NEVER apologise when speaking a language that is not your own. You should be proud that you can communicate and be understood and NEVER apologise for your accent, your accent is your culture and your identity you should wear it with pride.

Why are language learners obsessed with accents? I understand a part of being understood is pronouncing the words with clarity but that doesn't mean losing/hiding/hating your accent.
