Some commonly used Russian expressions with the word "язык" (tongue)👅

The Russian language is rich with idiomatic expressions. You can find them everywhere: in everyday speech, on TV, in newspaper articles, books, and so on. So basically everywhere, where you can find Russian.
Knowing them and using them at the right moment makes someone sound more natural and even amazing to the native ears.

Here we would take a look at some expressions and idioms with the word язык (tongue). Of course, there's a huge number one can find, but we will learn only some of them which every native speaker knows.

1. ЯЗЫК ДО КИЕВА ДОВЕДЁТ - The tongue will take you all the way to Kiev
In case you need to encourage someone to ask people for directions to go somewhere, this expression would be of great use.

Если ты не знаешь как дойти до музея, спроси кого-нибудь из местных.
Тебе обязательно помогут. Язык до Киева доведёт.

2. ВЕРТИТСЯ НА ЯЗЫКЕ - It's on the tip of my tongue.
When you are unable to remember any well-known word, and at the same time a certain amount of information about the forgotten word pops up in the memory. When you learn a language, this situation happens frequently, at least for me 😄

Извините, вертится на языке, но не могу вспомнить названия места, где мы отдыхали прошлым летом. Вспомню, скажу.

3. ЯЗЫК СЛОМАЕШЬ - You could break your tongue.
It's about the hard time some Russian words give you when you try to pronounce them. Could you recall one of them?

По-моему, это слишком длинное назавание для компании. Язык сломаешь.
Нужно подобрать что-то более лаконичное.

4. ЯЗЫК БЕЗ КОСТЕЙ - the tongue without bones
It's about a person who speaks a lot, without thinking about the consequences of his/her words.

Не стоит расстраиваться. Ну мало ли, что он сказал.
У него язык без костей. Не принимай близко к сердцу.

5. ЯЗЫК ЗАПЛЕТАЕТСЯ - slurring the words
It's about a person who is temporarily unable to speak clearly.

Часто по утрам у меня заплетается язык. Никто меня понять не может.
И только после чашки кофе я что-то внятное могу произнести.

6. ДЕРЖАТЬ ЯЗЫК ЗА ЗУБАМИ - hold your tongue
It's about being silent, not speaking when it is not necessary.

Пожалуйста, держи язык за зубами. Об этом никто не должен знать.

7. ЯЗЫК ХОРОШО ПОДВЕШЕН - have got a silver tongue
It literally means that the tongue is well-hanged and it describes a well-spoken person.

У политиков язык всегда хорошо подвешен. Они долго и красиво могут говорить, выдавая желаемое за действительность и сложно не поверить их словам.

8. ТЯНУТЬ ЗА ЯЗЫК - pull someone by the tongue
It is about provoking and forcing someone to speak.

Ну кто тебя за язык тянул? Зачем им знать заранее наши планы? Ведь всё может поменяться в любой момент. А теперь они будут ожидать от нас именно такое развитие событий.

9. СЛЕДИТЬ ЗА СВОИМ ЯЗЫКОМ - watch your mouth
It's about being careful in the choice of words; speak in normal words without insults.

Я благодарен тебе за помощь, но впредь следи за своим языком. Слова имеют силу.


10. ПРОГЛОТИТЬ ЯЗЫК - literally swollen the tongue
It's about keeping or falling silent, refraining from saying anything (out of fear, embarrassment, a lack of confidence, etc, or in an attempt not to reveal something.
Бабушка пыталась выяснить у Алёши, кто разбил салатницу, но тот молчал, словно язык проглотил.
